The Outrun: A Journey Through Memoir.

This film, based on Amy Liptrot’s award-winning memoir, is a deeply personal and reflective journey. It explores isolation, nature, and self-discovery, contrasting London’s chaos with the solitude of a small Scottish island. Through simple joys and selkie mythology, it reminds us of life’s essential connections.

There is no way that I can get you to watch this film. It is personal, intimate, and a memoir. It is based on Amy Liptrot’s award-winning 2017 memoir. It can only connect deeply with those who are open to do so. There are plenty of addiction-recovery drama stories on streaming platforms. So, what does make this personal set of recollections special? It is inspiring, encouraging, and serves as a reminder to absolutely everybody of the importance of those simple things in life: nature, family, friends, pets, tea…

What are those simple things that make you happy in life? I am happy when I spread butter on toast, chat with the person I like, go shopping with my mother, watch a horror movie with my sister, drink a cup of tea while sitting on the sofa, share the latest gossip with my flatmate, and write for the sake of it. There is very little that I can say about the film’s narrative. It is a personal story. It cannot be that different from the memoir. ‘How does London compare to Papa – a small island in Northern Scotland?’ Rona hears from the driver taking her to a remote house in Papa Westray Island. Rona seeks isolation, solitude, silence, and perspective. This house contrasts with crowded London. What is Rona running away from? London. What does Rona expect to find on an island in winter? Selkies.

‘The selkie is a mythological being found amongst the folklore of Scotland. Selkies are shapeshifters, transforming between seal and human form by shedding and replacing their skin. In their human form, selkie folk are always referred to as being incredibly attractive. They are graceful, kind-natured, and amorous, resulting in any humans coming across them falling desperately in love.’ Source: Selkies Outdoors, 2019.

Flames flicker in Rona’s dreams, sea waves crash against the rocks, and windows are subjected to the strength of the northern wind. The film captures a basic symbolism of human experience. Very little is needed to connect with the mysteries of life. At least, very little is needed to connect with oneself.

The Outrun is showing in UK cinemas. Year of release: 2024. Genre: Drama. Length: 1h 58m.
