Ealing Upcycles! Did you know?

Selection of second hand clothes at a charity shop

For the last two years, pre loved, has been a trending topic. Last summer, Love Island and eBay started a new deal to promote preloved clothes due to the increasing awareness in sustainable fast fashion.

In the recent month, I have seen or heard about environmental initiatives in the borough of Ealing that are impressive and worth sharing. These initiatives encourage people to give a second or extended life to their clothes. You do not want to miss out. Keep scrolling down and get to know what is new in the world of upcycling at the borough of Ealing.

Mary Horesh, Ealing Repair Cafe Project Leader, explains upcycling.

Ealing Repair Cafe

The Ealing Repair Cafe is recommended for local residents who enjoy repairing their old clothes and want to learn new ways to contribute to the protection of the environment. It also is another way to save money in the middle of an aggravating cost of living.

The sessions will teach you mending techniques of all sorts that you can put into practice in your own clothes. Do not worry if you are a beginner who never has never touched a needle. Each workshop includes materials for patches, sewing equipment, threads, sewing guides and books for reference.

What is Upcycling?

MaterialTrader.com has clear information about Upcycling and explains what is recycling and downcycling.

Check the Ealing Repair Café website to find all the information about the upcoming sessions. They are taking place across different venues in the borough of Ealing. The sessions are free to attend and you also have the option to make a suggested £3 donation in person or via the website.

We recently interviewed Mary Horesh, the Ealing Repair Café Project Leader, who shared with us how mending contributes to the protection of the environment and money saving. Check out the video above to see some examples of mending and the materials that you will have access to during the sessions.  The results are tremendous!

Next Stop for Fashion

Students from the University of West London have recently organised a social event around upcycling, sustainability and community. The event took place on May 14 for a whole evening at the Ealing Project. It was like a street fair where people could walk around, explore the different stalls, exchange their old clothes and have a refreshing drink while learning all about upcycling.

The vibes and the energy of the event were phenomenal, but you do not have to take my word for it. I made a video of the event walking around asking questions to the student who organised the event and business owners who have decided to bet their investment in a sustainable fashion.

UWL Students organised an fashion event focused on upcycling.

The event was organised by fashion business students from the University of West London in collaboration with the Ealing Council. The event also hosted a photojournalism exhibition organised by Alison Hawking, Lecturer in Journalism, and students from the Journalism and Broadcast Journalism courses.
